Assefa Bekele works as a Multicultural Community Liaison Officer with the NSW Police.
He arrived in Sydney in 1988 as a qualified engineer in Mining and Metallurgical engineer. He then completed post graduate studies on Regional and Local Community Development.
Assefa has been very active in volunteering with migrant groups, especially African communities. He initiated the Ethiopian Community Association of New South Wales, which has been running for over 15 years.
Assefa’s community work has been widely recognised. Thanks to his work he was selected to be an Olympic torch bearer during the Sydney Olympics. In his role as a MCLO with Blacktown police, Assefa has been involved in many projects and initiatives that have reached many communities outside of African-Australian groups, including Pacific Islander and e Phillipino, Indian and Afghani.
